Get a feel for the scale.
Compare square metres, hectares, square feet and acres. Keep the difference between a unit conversion and an accurate survey clear.
The same area, different units.
A hectare is 10,000 square metres. An international acre is 4,046.8564224 square metres. An international foot is exactly 0.3048 metres, so a square foot is 0.09290304 square metres.
Conversions help you compare listings; they cannot improve the accuracy of the source measurement. Map-calculated and seller-declared areas are still approximate or unverified as labelled.
Compare price on a consistent basis.
Convert each parcel to the same area unit before comparing unit prices. Divide the total asking price by the area in that unit. Do not compare a lease period with a purchase price or combine different currencies without an identified exchange-rate basis.
Price per unit area says nothing by itself about access, title, planning permission, utilities or suitability. Two equally sized parcels may offer very different possibilities and constraints.
Confirm the local convention.
Some places use local area units or survey conventions. Ask which unit and measurement basis the seller used, and confirm important figures from official documents or a qualified professional. The reference conversions here use international feet and acres, not a local historical survey-foot convention.
